What brought you to teach at your current High School ?
EVENTS
I had been approached to be a mentor for the ProStart competitive cooking team at Mat-Su Career and Technical High school . Seeing the students working at a such a high level of skill and focus was tremendously thrilling and rewarding . When the chef of the high school was ready to move on , he recommended me for the position . One interview and 5 years later , I am still going strong and loving every day of this gig .

What brought you to teach at your current High School ?
I love working with young people , especially when it comes to food . The opportunity actually found me . Palmer High has been my most rewarding jobs of my teaching career .
Kenai Central High School – Pamela Christmas
What has been your favorite part of being involved in ProStart ?
I love seeing new ideas and new ways of presenting dishes !!!! I love to compare ideas and experience other points of view when it comes to the food industry . I love that we have a way to see what other students are doing around Alaska and be able to compete with them .
North Pole High School – Max Pananen
What has been your favorite part of being involved in ProStart ?
Being part of a national organization that promotes and trains students for the hospitality industry . When people finally understand that ProStart is not the home ec class of yesteryear you see their attitude change for the positive . ProStart has allowed my students to develop their skills to industry standards and to see the crossover from classroom to jobs is awesome .
Thunder Mountain High School – Jay Watts
What brought you to the world of ProStart ?
Cooking career started as a dishwasher at Denny ’ s in Pocatello , ID . I worked my way up to host , then cook and waiter , I worked for 8 years in two different Mexican restaurants . As I was working in restaurants , I obtained my biology degree at Idaho state university . I have been teaching for 19 years in the Juneauy school district . I taught science and math for 15 years and have been teaching Culinary Arts for 4 years .
Ketchikan High School – Catherine McRoberts
What brought you to teach at your current High School ?
I am a Kayhi Alum . I had / have been a chef for about 20 years and when I returned home to Ketchikan I was so excited to see the position come open . It is really special to me to teach culinary at my high school .
