Vocal Latin

Georgia JCL is adding the Vocal Contest to its Creative Arts offerings at State Convention 2017. The Vocal Contest is a natural extension to the speech contests already offered. The idea came from Texas JCL where the Vocal Contests (solo, ensemble) have been popular for years. The Georgia Creative Arts chairs proposed the contest last year and offered a workshop at State where sample vocal pieces were sung and a judge gave feedback.

There is a very long tradition of sung Latin and many approaches and interpretations possible. The contest should appeal to students who enjoy singing and performing and who are willing to practice and maybe do a little research, even original translation. I’m curious and excited to hear what Georgia students come up with! Next year, we’ll gauge the interest and consider awarding sweepstakes points.
