Alabama Genomic Health Initiative Annual Report Annual Report-AGHI FINAL | Page 2

CONTENTS Welcome to the first annual report for the Alabama Genomic Health Initiative (AGHI). The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), in partnership with HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, launched the AGHI to better meet health needs across the state. We are delighted to share the accomplishments in this first year of funding to UAB from the Alabama Legislature. As we will detail in this publication, the AGHI conducted extensive strategic planning, launched the initiative publicly, and recruited over 1,000 participants in fiscal year 2016-2017. Through this collaboration, UAB and HudsonAlpha position the state of Alabama as a leader on the forefront of 21st century medicine. The AGHI harnesses the power of genomic analysis to help identify those at high risk for genetic diseases and provides a basis for continuing research into genetic contributors to health and disease. 2 What is the Alabama Genomic Health Initiative (AGHI) Why We Are Leaders in the Field This initiative advances the tremendous work already being done in genomics at UAB and at HudsonAlpha. The combined resources of the UAB-HudsonAlpha Center for Genomic Medicine, UAB Informatics Institute, and the Precision Medicine Institute will drive groundbreaking research based on the genomic information garnered by the AGHI. Through the AGHI, we can help make Alabama citizens healthier and demonstrate the value and power of genomic medicine in creating a new paradigm for health care. Thank you for your continued interest in the Alabama Genomic Health Initiative. 5 Leadership 6 AGHI Timeline Sincerely, 8 AGHI By the Numbers 10 Working Groups Bioethics Bruce R.
