Potluck Dinner

by Mehreen Rahim

The potluck dinner is one of the biggest gatherings for the beginning of the school year. Returning students organize this dinner to serve a dual purpose – to reconnect with old friends, and to welcome new students to Loyola’s Muslim Student Association. It is a great place for Freshmen and Transfer students to meet their fellow Freshmen and Transfers, as well as other members of the MSA. The event turned out to be remarkable this year, Alhumdullilah. New students gave positive feedback – many thought it was a great start to the year because they were able to meet new people right off the bat, and form friendships early on with students they saw throughout the week at other MSA events. For others, this event was their first impression of MSA. These students were happy to observe the strong community and kindness our fellow brothers and sisters displayed. Alhamdullilah, the event was a success, an instigator to the building of lifelong relationships, and a wonderful start to the year.

In recognition of the interfaith environment at Loyola University Chicago, Campus Ministry holds an annual event during the first week of school. Known as Faith Fest, this event primarily introduces new and returning students to the faith-based organizations on campus. The students are thus provided with an opportunity to learn about each organization, the events they organize, and how new members can get involved.

Aside from its informative purpose, this event is an important representation of the close-knit community that Campus Ministry aims to provide for students at Loyola. Seeing all faith-based organizations convene in one room, interact with one another, and enjoy the delicious desserts of different cultures is proof of this communal environment – one that extends to the students a true interfaith community like no other.

This year’s Faith Fest, however, holds a special place in our MSA’s history. August 26th 2014 marked the announcement of Loyola’s first Muslim chaplain: Omer Mozaffar. Although he could not attend the event, the news of his new position put a smile on every students’ face and led to a series of congratulations. One could feel the joy and happiness emanating throughout the room.

I cannot emphasize enough how fortunate we are to have Professor Mozaffar as our chaplain. He is not only our chaplain, but also our advisor, mentor, teacher, friend, and most importantly a second father. He is a valuable resource and I urge you all to learn from him and further enrich your college experience. As a graduating senior, I can say with confidence that you will not regret it!
