Message From The Service Chair
by Safa Arfeen
Assalamualaikum Everyone,
Granted this is the first issue of our newsletter, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Safa Arfeen, and I am the Service Chair for this upcoming year. For those of you who do not know me, I am currently a junior who spends her free time juggling academics, MSA, volunteering, and eating cheetos. Returning MSA members are probably a bit confused as to what a “Service Chair” is. Alhumdullilah, this is the first year that our MSA has had this position, but most certainly not the first year we have organized service events. Last year, we won the service award at Loyola. This was due to the huge success of the Bagged Lunches event started by Sharifah Abdullah, our current president.
As the Service Chair, I am working closely with Zainab Bozai and the Dawah team to increase the positive effect that MSA’s service events have on Loyola and the surrounding community. In fact, we recently had our very first Bagged Lunches event. With a total of six organizations cosponsoring, we were able to make 671 lunches. This exceeded our goal by more than 200, Alhumdullilah!
I cannot emphasize enough how integral service is to our religion and an excellent way to spread dawah on campus. InshAllah, the service work MSA does will continue to grow and succeed. If you have any questions or ideas about what MSA can do, please feel free to email me at [email protected]! I look forward to making this year a success, inshaAllah!
All the Best,
Safa Arfeen
Message From The Fundraising Chairs
by Meriem Sadoun & Mohammed Farooqi
Everything that we do in this world needs to be in effort of perfecting our character and spirituality. The best example of how to achieve that is looking at the beloved Messenger of Allah (SWT) and following his example.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, once said, “The one who cares for an orphan and myself will be together in Paradise like this,” and he held his two fingers together to illustrate.
Hence, the basis of our orphan sponsorship drive. Last year, MSA helped sponsor five years through the creative efforts of Zeba Shethwala and Ahad Bagasarawala, as well as the immense involvement of the Muslim students on campus.
This year's fundraising chairs are Mohammed Farooqi, Sophomore, and Meriem Sadoun, Junior. We have numerous event that we hope to make a great success this year Inshallah. More importantly, we want to keep the spirit of love and charity alive by keeping our intentions pure and for Allah's sake.
As clever and creative as we are, us Chairs have decided to keep some old traditions alive as well as start some new ones this year. This semester we are planning the following events: Assassins, Henna Fundraisers, Game Night(s), MSA Iron Chef, Eid Gift Exchange, Strengthsquest, Sports Tournaments, and Athletic Nights.
Furthermore, we hope to develop a personal connection with the cause. We will organize a volunteer trip to an orphanage in Chicago in an effort to spend time with the kids we are raising money for or even start a pen pal program! In the past, the money raised has been donated solely to a global charity. This year we want to make sure some of the funds that you all contribute to reach an orphan or two in the Chicagoland area.
Plan on participating in these events first and foremost to fulfill a command of Allah (SWT) and help those in need and to have fun and share a laugh with your fellow Ramblers. If any of you are interested in joining the Fundraising Committee, do not hesitate to contact either Meriem at [email protected] or Farooqi at [email protected]
Peace,
The FCs
