THE COMMODIOUS CHEST (AL60010)
A serpentine mahogany commode, with strapwork
marquetry to the top and sides inlaid with amboyna,
ebony and rosewood, the solid brass bound ogee
moulded top above three serpentine drawers applied
with fine ormolu cartouche escutcheons and bold drop
handles and mounts on a plinth base and bracket feet
with brass mounts.
EUROPEAN FASHION AND STYLE
The original Régence commode (circa 1720) was
purchased by the 5th Earl Spencer, known as ‘The Red
Earl’, from the London firm of Edwards & Roberts in
1865 for £9.
The distinctive form of this chest is found predominantly in
the Louis XIV and Regence period and was often used by
