The Spencer Gainsborough Chair
A finely hand carved mahogany Gainsborough chair, the serpentine arched upholstered back and
bowfront seat between scroll arms with cabochon terminal arms and acanthus leaf decoration, the
shaped seat rail with leaf scroll carving and cartouche capped cabriole legs terminating in claw and
ball feet. Inspired by an early George III original.
Many prominent members of the Spencer family sat for Thomas Gainsborough. Gainsborough chairs
are so named after the type’s appearance in a number of portraits by Thomas Gainsborough (17271788) and is seen in England from the mid 18th century onwards.
