The Curator’s Bookcase
A superbly carved mahogany and flame mahogany glazed bookcase, the breakfront cornice above four astragal glazed doors
enclosing glass inset adjustable shelves and a lit interior, flanked by fluted and brass capital columns, the gadrooned edge breakfront
base with a frieze drawer and a cabinet below, flanked by four graduated drawers to each side, on acanthus leaf carved ogee bracket
feet. Inspired by an original by Thomas Chippendale, circa 1760.
Inspired by Albert Edward John Spencer (7th Earl Spencer), 23rd May 1892 – 9th June 1975. ‘Jack’ Spencer, also known as ‘The
Curator Earl’, had a passion for the history of Althorp and the preservation of the estate. A scholar and art connoisseur he “loved
nothing more than… dusting the books in the Library.” Charles Spencer, Althorp: The Story of an English House.
