THE WOOTTON HALL TABLE (AL53044)
A magnificent and finely carved and white painted
console table, the veined black marble top above a
Greek key carved frieze with a central lion head and leafy
swags below, the bold naturalistic hairy lion legs with
paw and disc feet. The original George I by Benjamin
Goodison now in the Wootton Hall at Althorp.
IMPORTANT ENGLISH FURNITURE
The original of this magnificent table was commissioned
by Charles Spencer, 5th Earl of Sunderland for the
remodelled Wootton Hall in 1729.
Benjamin Goodison (c-1700 – 1767) was appointed royal
cabinetmaker to George II in 1727. He apprenticed with
James Moore, the pre-eminent London cabinetmaker
during the reign of George I, whose work can also
be seen in certain cabinets at Althorp. Goodison was
heavily influenced by classical antiquity and his style
can be aligned with that of William Kent.
