THE SEDDON CHAIRS (AL40802 / AL41043)
A mahogany dining chair, the shaped waisted back
with serpentine uprights above an upholstered seat, on
elegant moulded cabriole legs terminating in spade feet.
UNIQUE TO ALTHORP
The original large set was designed and executed by
George Seddon, circa 1800, now in the Marlborough
Room at Althorp. The chairs are fondly known as the
‘squiggle-back’ chairs at Althorp.
The firm of Seddon was founded in the mid-18th century by George Seddon (c. 1727-1801) at Aldergate Street,
London.
Despite their stature as one of the leading cabinetmakers in the latter part of the 18th century, whose clients
included the Empress of Russia, the 5th Duke of Bedford, Lord Howard of Audley End and Lord Mansfield
of Kenwood House, few pieces survive which can be
associated with the commissions.
The ‘squiggle-back’ chairs were commissioned by
George John, 2nd Earl Spencer and executed du ɥ
