OBSTACLES DO THEY HOLD you back OR SPUR YOU ON? S udhanshu, a multitalented student was not only a topper in academics but was an outstanding athlete as well. Due to his multifaceted personality his cupboard was brimming with medals and trophies won at various athletic meets and competitions held over the past years. He held the school records for the 100 meters running race as well as the 100 meters free stroke in swimming. Like every year, the annual sports meet was announced by the school. Many students registered their names for their favourite sports and also began practising rigorously. As usual, Sudhanshu too registered for his two pet events. But this year his friends compelled him to try his hand at steeple chase. Being the supreme 04 | January 2015 athlete that he was, he too felt confident of winning it although he would be participating in such a race for the first time. The day of the meet finally arrived and the school stadium was filled with friends and family of the participants. The cheer leaders and the school band added to the already charged atmosphere. Soon the sports teacher announced the schedule of the day and the first event which was 100-meter free style swimming. Having held complete monopoly over the event, there were very few challengers to Sudhanshu and he won the race quite comfortably. Next was the 100 meter dash. Here too Sudhanshu won but had to put in his best efforts to ward off the challenge from one of his batch mates. It was his experience that helped him win eventually. Finally it was the turn of the steeple chase. With two gold medals already to his credit, the atmosphere in the stands was fully charged in anticipation of a first ever hat trick of gold medals by any athlete in the history of the school.
