While I serve a congregation that suits my own background and manner of observance, I interact with colleagues, congregants, visitors, and other Jews of all backgrounds, beliefs, and practices. The pluralistic mindset and training provided by AJR provides an excellent foundation for service in the diverse environments rabbis and cantors encounter in the real Jewish community of today- and only more so tomorrow.
Additionally, as a rabbi with a military background, I believe that the openminded, pluralistic approach inculcated by learning at AJR is ideal preparation for chaplaincy- military, hospital, or prison- where the population served is not selfselected and like-minded, but a diverse group of individuals brought together by circumstance, who need a chaplain to understand and respect their differing approaches to Judaism.”
