The Judge Learned Hand Award was established by American Jewish Committee ( AJC ) in 1964 in honor of the senior judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1924 to 1951 . Judge Hand was widely admired as a dean among American jurists and famous for the extensive range of decisions he rendered .
The award was created to recognize outstanding members of the Seattle legal community who have distinguished themselves through professional achievement and dedicated community leadership .
