GOVT SCHEME FOR CONTROLLING POLLUTION
New Delhi : The odd - even vehicle rationing will return to the national
capital for ve days from Monday, as the Delhi government announced
the formula as a stop-gap arrangement to deal with a situation that it
declared as a “pollution emergency”.
Delhi and its neighborhoods remained under a thick cloud of smog for
the third straight day on Thursday. The city witnessed the worst level of air
quality in the wee hours of Thursday, when the concentration of PM 2.5
particles was the highest at 640, said a government agency that monitors
air quality in four cities, including the capital. Weather experts said the
worst may be over and predicted air quality to improve from Friday afternoon,
though it may still remain severe till Saturday.
This is the third time in two years that Delhi is implementing the odd-even
scheme for private passenger vehicles. Theoretically, it would remove half
the passenger vehicles from the city roads, reducing vehicle pollution by
that much. But a previous study of the scheme had said its effectiveness on
controlling pollution was
“inconclusive”.
