“ EMBARKING ON A CAREER IN THE RAF WAS THE BEST THING I EVER DID , I HAVE ENJOYED EVERY MOMENT ”
ON THE JOB TERMINAL CONTROLLER
SCOTT
Scott joined the RAF in 2012 as an Air Operations ( Control ) Sergeant after completing his degree in Aeronautical Engineering and is currently serving at Air Traffic Control , RAF Cranwell .
“ My first taste of the RAF was RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire for Basic Training . Having passed out in May by successfully completing military training including general
service knowledge , drill and force protection , I then progressed onto the Non-Commissioned Aircrew and Controller Initial Training Course at RAFC Cranwell in Lincolnshire . The aim of this course was to deliver air minded training to develop my leadership and management skills , presentation and public speaking ability , defence writing and other academic topics . I graduated as a Sergeant in April 2013 and moved onto the Joint Air Traffic Controllers Course at RAF Shawbury in Shropshire . My controller training lasted for 7 months from April 2013 , learning how to speak to aircraft and the required procedural skills that
would develop me for my first tour . This was to be at RAF Marham in Norfolk , then home to 3 Tornado GR4 squadrons , now the home of the F-35 Lightning 2 . I started my second tour at RAFC Cranwell in January of 2015 one of the busiest flying stations in the RAF , home of elementary flying training for the Army , Royal Navy and RAF . Along with providing air traffic services , I am a member of the training team , a role designed to develop newly graduated controllers and multi-tourist to safely control in the busy airspace around RAFC Cranwell . I also act as an airfield manager and a reporting officer for the junior ranks in the tower ,
guiding and developing my flight to become competitive for promotion to Corporal . During my time at RAFC Cranwell I have completed an overseas tour at RAF Mount Pleasant , Falkland Islands . Outside of work I am a keen runner , since joining up I have completed several marathons , including Paris and London , with help from RAF PTIs , all completed whilst raising money for charity . In 2018 I was lucky enough to be selected to run the initial leg of the RAF100 baton relay from Cranwell to Waddington .”
