I became involved in associations because I thought we
needed to professionalize ourselves. I detested the idea that
we were just a group of salesmen out there laying waste to
the world. I love seeing people getting a home. Education is
important and so is licensing. We need to monitor people and
make sure they are properly trained, that they understand
what they’re doing and are ethically based.
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AS A LEADER IN AIME?
A: Leveling the playing field. We could do much better with
the CFPB and Dodd-Frank. The cost of loans has gone up. I
make more on loans than I did before, so the consumer pays
more. I’d like to speed the process up. We have all kinds of
waiting periods.
I’ve spent many hours sifting through the CFPB complaint
database, and I have yet to see a pure broker labeled in it. You’ll
find plenty of bankers and banks in there. Credit bureaus are
the number one source of complaints, and I’ve yet to see one
of those complainants get relief. They get responses, but no
relief. There’s something wrong with that.
I would like the opportunity to talk to people at the CFPB
about these various issues and work on reasoning with them.
We want to see people treated fairly and get them good loan
programs. I’m excited about getting in there and doing it. We
should do what’s good for me, the consumer, and the economy
in general. Let’s do what is great for everybody. I get excited
about that.

JIM MORRISON
John Councilman is one of the best-known and respected
individuals in the mortgage industry. His accomplishments
are legendary. He started one of the first true secondary-
market mortgage brokerages in the state of Maryland in
1985. He was a founding member of that state association.
He was successful in rewriting the state’s mortgage law,
passing loan originator licensing legislation, and authoring
its appraisal management law. He was named its first
Mortgage Broker of the Year.
