I’d wanted to get Christian music accepted in the mainstream market for a few years by the time this campaign was launched so to say that I got behind this campaign with all I could would be a massive understatement. Hearing an overtly Christian song on Radio 1, the biggest secular radio station in the U.K., sent shivers scuttling down my spine on a regular basis and I instantly knew that my dream in life was to work in the Christian music industry and help promote/share Christian music to those who need it. Soon after this campaign, another one was launched to get LZ7’s “This Little Light Of Mine” single into the charts and it was upon seeing the music video on MTV that God provided me with the assurance that this is what He wants me to spend my life doing.
Thanks to these campaigns and messages from God, I did a complete 180 degree turn on where I stand on this debate and started listening to an awful lot more bands and artists whose message was “watered down” to reach a wider fan base. Last year, I started a facebook page (Christian Contemporary Music) to keep people up to date on the latest Christian music, news, videos etc and thanks to that page, and my knowledge of Christian music, I was invited by the president of Chrematizo Label Group to write album reviews and articles for JesusWired. God’s blessed me massively over the last year and has opened the right doors at the right times. I know hardly anything about the music industry so this is simply a letter from a dedicated Christian music fan...
Many have accused you of releasing this song purely to gain recognition, and launching an indiegogo campaign just a few weeks later will surely only have convinced those doubters that their suspicions were spot on. Towards the end of the song you address your motive behind the song and state that it is “nothing more but to reach out to a brother in the Lord through the platform of my music”. Personally, I think the timing of the release is questionable but I’m not one to subscribe to the view that it’s for publicity so I’ll grant you the benefit of the doubt on this one.
I do feel though that you may have gone about addressing your issues with Lecrae in the wrong way. I fail to see the merit in dealing with this in a public forum, especially as it’s a topic that’s so hotly debated and divides the Christian music scene on a regular basis. It was always going to cause controversy and this re-occurring issue could ultimately cause irreparable division within the Christian music scene. I would suggest that a heartfelt private message to Lecrae would’ve been the better option.
