Modernising the palm oil industry
Exploring the role of automation in the evolution of palm oil production
BY ADELINE ANTHONY ALPHONSO
PRODUCING palm oil in Malaysia is a labourintensive process that has long relied on traditional methods . Yet , the process of cultivating and harvesting this vital commodity is an increasing challenge because of rising costs and a dwindling workforce .
As global demands continue to grow , embracing technology is no longer a choice but a necessity for the palm oil sector to thrive .
Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani is spearheading efforts to integrate automation and advanced technologies , ensuring Malaysia remains a global leader in palm oil production .
THE ROLE OF AUTOMATION IN PALM OIL
Automation and mechanisation are set to redefine the palm oil industry . Johari believes that the future of palm oil lies not just in the fertile soil of Malaysia ’ s plantations but in the integration of cutting-edge technology .
Johari emphasised that technologies like artificial intelligence ( AI ) and the Internet of Things ( IoT ) have the potential to revolutionise plantation management . For instance , IoT-enabled drones can map specific areas during replanting , determining precise fertiliser needs and detecting early signs of diseases or nutrient deficiencies .
“ Automation and mechanisation are no longer just options - they are necessities ,” Johari said in an exclusive interview with AgroBiz .
“ The introduction of robotics , AI , and IoT is not about replacing the human element but enhancing it , ensuring that Malaysia remains a global leader in palm oil production while addressing critical issues like labour shortages and environmental sustainability .”
GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS
However , Johari ’ s vision extends beyond just the fields . He recognises that for automation to be successful , it must be supported by government policies and incentives . The Ministry is doing just that by offering various incentives for companies investing in automation technology .
One of the critical areas of focus is the harvesting process , which remains one of the most labour-intensive parts of palm oil production . Despite the sector ’ s reliance on manual labour , Johari sees a future where technology takes the lead .
