AGRIBEL CHAIRMAN ' S REPORT
‘ O koud is die windjie en skraal ,’ were the well-known words of poet Eugene Marais . The Covid-19 pandemic , the extent of unemployment and poverty , particularly in the rural areas , the decline of towns and cities , the alarming rate and impact of corruption , the state of affairs at government owned organisations such as Eskom and the renewed pressure on land reform could leave one in great distress .
Amidst these circumstances , it is a privilege to present a set of financial statements which is not only positive , but which speaks of performance . The results are not only the outcome of favourable agricultural conditions , but also of excellent management and sustained performance by the staff of the Senwes Group , despite one of the biggest disruptions in living memory .
In addition to the operational results of the Senwes Gorup , a number of strategic higlights were experienced this year . The finalisation of the transaction with the Suidwes Group fulfilled a long-standing objective of regional consolidation in agriculture and valuable new shareholders were added to the Agribel shares register . The KLK-transaction concluded in the previous year , started to show positive results . Agribel also managed to acquire the shareholing of Grindrod in Senwes , which will place Agribel in an excellent position for future strategic actions .
At board level we took leave of Tom van Rooyen , who made an important impact and a valuable contribution during his seven years as director of Senwes and Agribel , particularly by representing the producer on the Agribel and Senwes boards of directors . After the finalisation of the Suidwes transaction , Hansie Viljoen and Gert Malherbe joined us as directors of Agribel . Both are successful farmers and experienced businessmen with good corporate exposure .
In conclusion we wish to thank and acknowledge our Heavenly Father for His guidance and protection . Through Him everything is possible .
