Irrigation Technology
Excellent irrigation technologies are
used in South Africa and many of
the technologies have been internationally recognised. On an annual
basis, innovations in irrigation are
recognized by ICID and in this regard WatSave awards are presented
to recognise outstanding contributions to water conservation or water saving in agriculture. The awards
given to individuals or a team of
individuals are made in respect of
actual realised savings. In this regard SANCID members received a
number of ICID awards during the
few years of affiliation with ICID:

Award: Dr Richard Stirzaker - the
Wetting Front Detector for irrigation scheduling
2006: ICID WatSave Innovative
Water Management Award: Dr
Nico Benade –Water Administration System
2007: ICID WatSave Innovative
Water Management: Dr Abraham Singels – irrigation scheduling with cellular technology
2010: ICID WatSave Innovative
Water Management: Kobus Harbron for his application and
work on “Water distribution
management at Vaalhartswater,
South Africa” by using the Water
Administration System.
2011: ICID WatSave Innovative
Water Management: Mr Pieter
van Heerden and Mr Charles
Crosby- Development of SAPWAT to determine crop water
requirements.
Conclusion
The success of irrigated agriculture
in South Africa lies in the commitment, dedication and professionalism of various role players.
Some of the most advanced irrigation technologies and management
techniques are being used in the
South African market. Together
with the ICID the South Africa is
interacting on a global way to stay
abreast of the newest irrigation
technologies and techniques.
