soil types also give the Elim wines their notable minerality.
Winemaking started in the region more than a century
ago – when sacramental wine was made for the missionary town of Elim. For decades, other agricultural
activities dominated the region, until 1996, when the
first vines were planted. Four years later, the first wine
of origin Elim was released – a Lands End Sauvignon
Blanc.
The Elim Wine Festival takes place for the fifth year.
This year the Black Oystercatcher Wines, situated close
to Cape Agulhas, will host the event – where the region’s wines, local craft beer and local produce will be
on offer.
Wine lovers will also be able to get to know the wines
and winemakers a little more intimately. Tutored wine
tastings with the winemakers will highlight the terroir.
Connoisseurs can enjoy the stories that accompany
each wine farm, and compare vintages during the tast-
ings.
Festival-goers can also enjoy meals perfectly paired with
the wines, and an array of fresh local produce and locally-made products to take home with them.
The Elim-area is also home to craft beer, such as the
most southerly brewery, Fraser’s Folly. And the innovative Cederberg Brewery will present their Boggom and
Voertsek ale.
Other activities hosted throughout the day include a
vintage tractor parade and archery on horseback. Local
musician Nic Stevens will entertain the crowds with his
music.
