Q .

As it relates to estate and long-term care planning , what are the options to protect assets in advance , versus the options for emergency protection ?

A .

Advanced estate planning allows the opportunity to potentially preserve up to 100 percent of the assets that a person has , but this planning must be done at least five years in advance of a long-term care needs . Emergency planning , on the other hand , provides the opportunity to preserve assets for someone who did not do advanced planning but needs immediate long-term care . If someone has a spouse who lives in the community , we can often save all of their otherwise available assets when an emergency need for long-term care arises . When someone does not have a spouse , we can still often save about half of their otherwise available assets . Proper planning allows a unique opportunity to protect assets while also focusing on the need for appropriate care , maintaining options and preserving Autonomy .
