Dementia under CDC

Study puts focus on how the model for consumer-directed care affects service and delivery for clients, carers and families.

When consumer-directed care is discussed in a public forum, healthcare professionals often ask about the barriers and facilitators people with dementia would encounter navigating the model.

Hoping to answer such questions, Tracee Cash, a PhD candidate from Griffith University’ s Menzies Health Institute Queensland, is undertaking a large study looking at the experiences of people with dementia living in the community and their carers.
Cash said the research is threefold.“ We are aiming to gain an understanding of how CDC is enacted within the family of people with dementia living in the community, but we also want to get an understanding of the barriers and facilitators to enacting CDC for these people in the community.
“ There are also those voices that are being heard and not heard within the CDC aged-care arena, and it’ s hoped that this research will provide important insight that will inform government and service providers as they negotiate and adapt policies and procedures to the CDC model of care.”
Cash said one of her motivations for this study was the increasing pervasiveness of dementia in Australia. She said that by 2050 there could be 900,000 Australians living with dementia. At the moment, it costs $ 1.1 billion annually to look after the 30 per cent of Australians with dementia who live in residential care facilities, a number set to increase significantly.
Professor Wendy Moyle, program director of Optimising Health Outcomes at Menzies Health Institute Queensland, said there has been no research to date that specifically focuses on people with dementia under CDC, and added Cash’ s study would add to understanding of this aspect of the CDC model. ■
