Bethanie completely marinated itself in the Olympic
spirit recently, hosting the Beth-a-Lympics, a
beachside festival of fun and games pitting four of the group’s
facilities against one another in a series of challenges.
“Over 40 residents across four Bethanie residential aged-care
facilities – Beachside, Kingsley, Geneff and Illawong – participated
on the day in activities including hockey, pass ball, skittles and
beanbag toss,” said Bethanie Beachside site manager Louisa
Chadwick. “The competitive nature of the residents certainly
came out, making a close scoreboard throughout the day!
“All had a great day and the Beachside facility was filled with
cheering and laughter from both residents and staff.”
Chadwick, playing the dual role of sports administrator and
on-the-ground reporter, relayed that resident George Purdon,
from Bethanie Beachside, took out a perfect score in the
beanbag contest, while Olivera McMahon-Winter said she was
blown away by the day.
“She continues to tell her friends about it while showing off her
winning medal and certificate,” Chadwick said. “Joseph Stenson,
who celebrated his 100th birthday at Bethanie Kingsley earlier
this year, was also not one to shy away from the Beth-a-Lympics,
demonstrating the competitive nature that took him to the 1948
Summer Olympics in London for wrestling.” ■
