Industry Related IMPROVING JOBSITE PRODUCTIVITY Students who attend this program will learn the best methods for achieving real gains in productivity on their jobsites. Learn how projects are completed in 10%, 20% or even 30% less time with the same amount of labor! This course was developed using principles of advanced learning developed by a team of researchers from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. It is about “working smarter, not harder”. The course focuses on the underlying reasons poor productivity exists in the construction industry. A key part of the course is developing a clear understanding of the actual costs of unproductively on the job site. Students are asked to take the principles learned and develop an action plan in class, for use on return to their projects. The timely principles addressed will benefit contractors no matter whether they do 100% of their work with their own labor forces, or sub out 100%! The course goal is increasing productivity without sacrificing safety and quality. When used properly LPS can dramatically improve productivity and contribute to significantly better project performance. It does this by engaging those that will actually be conducting the daily planning of the work on the job, the superintendents and foremen or Last Planners, through a series of interconnected commitments in a highly visual environment. Howell and Ballard learned through their research that on average 54% of what was planned on a weekly basis by superintendents was actually completed. Using LPS, this completion rate moves into the 80 to 90% range weekly for high-performing teams. Morning Session: CREATE the “aha moment”. Start with a half-day Villego® simulation: a fast-paced, high-energy competition among small groups with 2 Rounds. First, build an 8- layer Lego® building using traditional planning methods. Then build it again using pull planning. Teams compete for Best Time, Best Quality, Highest Profit & Safest project. Results: dramatic. Afternoon Session: SOLIDIFY the inspiration and enthusiasm created with Villego® in the morning with an afternoon half-day, hands-on “Build This Room” learning session in small groups in front of a planning wall. Participants will learn the basics of the Last Planner® System by actually handling the tags and boards of Last Planner® Pull Planning including Milestone Schedule, Phase Pull Plan and Weekly Work Plan. Participants will receive personal coaching, be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them in a non-judgmental atmosphere, understand the nuances and elements of the system by asking questions, receiving explanations when their minds are open.
