together towards the same goal, then you have a much better chance of success. ASM: In Sierra Leone, you worked with some young kids at the Craig Bellamy Foundation, teaching them the game. How was that experience and what did you take away from that situation? Founder of the Craig Bellamy Academy himself ; Mr. Craig Bellamy (r ) on a visit with Coach and Trainer Johnny McKinstry at the CBFA Campus in Sierra Leone; Johnny: The level of talent amongst young players in Sierra Leone Senior administrator and Trainer Johnny McKinstry was excellent, and the kids explaining some of his operational methods with his students we had at the Craig to founder of the Academy and former Liverpool Star Craig Bellamy . Bellamy Foundation were the best of tha t talent, aging between 11 and 18. Not only on the football pitch; but also in the classroom and in everyday life. Our aim was to not only develop world-class footballers, but also exceptional young men who will go forward and be tomorrow’s role models in Sierra Leone. I have no doubts that this will be the case, and in the coming years you will hear of many CBF graduates who have went on to achieve great things, not only in football, but in various walks of life, and subsequently raise the bar for not only Sierra Leone, but the whole of Africa. It is an experience such as this that confirms to me what I have always believed – that human potential has no boundaries. Some of these kids come from the most povertystricken backgrounds, yet now find themselves studying or playing in the USA or Europe. They have changed their lives for themselves…. nothing was given to them – they had to work hard for their success. It is because of this I know I can ask more of the players I coach everyday. Because if these kids can do such amazing things, then what is working a bit better in training in pursuit of success. When you look at the big picture it’s simple really. You just have to have the right perspective. ASM: You also got your first major assignment as a very young man to be head coach for Leone Stars of Sierra Leone. Tell us how you felt when you got the appointment. Johnny: I was very honored. To be asked to lead a nation, where over 6 million people are so in love with the game; that is a great privilege – and that was how I 4
