Even before delegates at the 125Th International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) session at Buenos Aires, Argentina had cast their votes on September 10th 2013, it was clear that there was only one favorite to succeed Jacques Rogge, and that was Thomas Bach; a fifty-nine year old German lawyer and ex-fencing gold medalist who had announced his intentions to contest the presidency on 9th May 2013, when it was apparent that the presidency was up for grabs after Rogge had completed a twelve years term.

But he [Bach] was to face stiff competition from other sporting heavyweights that included the likes of the legendary Ukrainian Sergey Bubka.
