Refereeing Comes Of Age

There were no incidents of poor match officiating during the course of the tournament testifying that Africa’s match refereeing has come of age. African referees have often been overlooked for global tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and they used the CHAN 2014 tournament to let Sepp Blatter and Zurich know that they are here to deliver.

Algeria’s Mohammed Benouza was given the whistle to handle the final match.

Libya Wins All Knock out Stages On Penalty Shootouts

One memory that can never be ignored was how the Mediterranean Knights won the CHAN 2014 tournament.

It is not every day that a nation wins the cup after triumphing through all their knock out matches on penalty shootouts.

But this is football. Libya beat Gabon in the quarter finals, Zimbabwe in the semi finals and Ghana in the finals all on penalty shootouts. What a piece of history!

The DRC won the inaugural tournament in 2009 while Tunisia took it home two years back. Libya won it this year and 2016 will determine whether they will become the first nation to defend the crown. Only time will tell.
