The scale of illegal mining, the numbers of people employed by syndicates, and the loss in revenue to the economy of the illicit mining, sale and exports of minerals and metals is unknown given the opaque and secretive nature of these activities.
No single stakeholder can address the challenge of illegal mining and collaboration is key. The industry, individually and through the Minerals Council, remains committed to working with other
stakeholders in addressing this serious challenge.
Like so many other pressing economic and social issues facing South Africa, it is only through private and public sector collaboration that this scourge can be effectively addressed but the platform of appropriate regulations and law enforcement is an essential element in this partnership.

The impact of this partnership has been nothing short of inspiring
99 % pass rate in Gauteng and an 85 % pass rate in its first year of operation in the Western Cape. These milestones are a testament not only to the commitment of Tomorrow Trust’ s educators and mentors but also to the power of corporate partnerships in creating lasting change.
Concor’ s involvement has directly supported 16 learners through the programme to date, all of whom have gone on to access higher education or secure meaningful employment. Many of these learners are now pursuing degrees in critical fields such as law, computer science and engineering, illustrating how access to education and structured mentorship can unlock real opportunities and empower young people to break the cycle of poverty. The company currently supports a new cohort of 13 learners. Support for these learners started in 2024, when they were in Grade 10 and all 13 learners successfully advanced to Grade 11 in 2025.
