Volvo Penta and UIG partner to support grids with BESS .
In March this year , just days after announcing its strategic entry into the battery energy storage sector ( BESS ) jointly with OEMs ( Original Equipment Manufacturers ), Volvo Penta as a BESS subsystem supplier has unveiled a partnership with Utility Innovation Group ( UIG ) aimed at US and international markets . The two companies are collaborating to enhance power grid reliability and resiliency through battery energy storage and integration – maximising the use of the grid ’ s renewable wind and solar power .

Based in Raleigh , North Carolina , UIG is dedicated to influencing the growth of decentralised and advanced utility systems worldwide , helping power companies and major energy users build a more sustainable and resilient grid . With Volvo Penta ’ s highly configurable and inherently scalable battery energy storage subsystem enabling excess energy to be preserved until demand increases , the company ’ s solution is set to play a major role in UIG ’ s plans .
Progress of the CERENERGY ® Battery Project was reported at the beginning of this year . An Australian company progressing commercialisation of the CERENERGY Solid State Battery in Germany announced significant advancement of the technology . Their salt batteries are a game-changing alternative to lithium-ion .
These batteries are fire and explosion-proof , have a life span of more than 15 years and operate in extreme cold and desert climates . The battery technology uses common table salt – sodium ions – and is free of lithium , cobalt , graphite and copper , thereby eliminating exposure to critical metal price rises and supply chain concerns .
Altech Chemicals Ltd . has been working in a joint venture since September 2022 with German battery institute Fraunhofer IKTS , to commercialise a 100MW-hour Cerenergy battery plant in Saxony , Germany .
CEO Iggy Tan noted in an interview with the Market Herald that this is a more economical alternative to lithium battery technology and that they will be targeting the renewable energy market , which is expected to grow 28 % every year .

It takes two Volvo Penta will work closely with UIG to adapt and integrate the subsystem into its modular nodes of scalable battery energy storage with the goal of ultimately designing a resilient and carbonfree grid .
The foundation of UIG is built upon extensive experience and knowledge in the field of distributed energy resources ( DER ), microgrids , data centres and power systems , with an emphasis on the potential for large-scale deployment of BESS applications . Moreover , they possess strong connections with key players who demand dependable power systems , including electric utilities , industrial operations and data centres .
