THE ERA OF SMART MINES ?

By Boris Ivanov
The mining industry is certain to undergo significant change over the next few years . In the era of smart mines , the question is , how will technological innovation shape the future of mining ?

Traditionally , mining has been slow to adopt new technologies and embrace innovations that could transform the industry . However , over the past ten years , the industry has faced an increasingly challenging scenario – to improve efficiency and reduce costs , whilst also demonstrating an increased environmental and social awareness .

Amidst the turmoil of a global pandemic , the pressure to get this balance right has only intensified and triggered many countries to re-assess the long-lasting impacts of their mining projects . As a result , new processes and technologies must be developed to meet the increasing demand for materials and this is where the rise of smart mines can offer a solution .
Today , companies are adopting automated technologies to improve and streamline their operations and gain better control on real-time data . Smart technologies for mining and distribution from AI and spatial visualisation data to automated drones are being implemented to increase overall productivity and efficiency whilst significantly reducing risk . Maximising technological solutions in the industry is set to rise . A 2017 report by professional services company Accenture found that 82 % of the mining industry is looking to increase investments in technological innovations over the next few years . So , how will technological innovation shape the future of mining ?
Artificial Intelligence and its impact Rapid advances in artificial intelligence tools are improving planning and operational efficiencies , mine safety and workflow productivity as well as stimulating the integrated supply chain . For example , by using smart data and machine learning , a single operator can now remotely control several drill rigs simultaneously , with autonomous vehicles taking over pit-to-pit operations .
Moreover , AI can also be used to provide recommendations on new and potentially valuable sites to mine . By using pattern matching and predictive analysis , AI programmes can analyse significant quantities of geological data and identify where to find resources . This not only helps companies to locate and extract minerals at a much quicker pace , but also to reduce the initial investment required as mining companies can plan exploration activities with much more precision .
