URANIUM-RICH NIGER PROSPECTS IMPEDED BY POLITICS ?
The mining sector in Niger was thrown into turmoil after the uranium-rich country suspended international activities , writes Dr Nicolaas C Steenkamp .
Niger , a landlocked country in West Africa , is often overlooked due to its vast desert landscapes and economic challenges . However , its significance in the global uranium market and its complex political landscape makes it a country of interest as an international player in the nuclear energy sector .
Niger is the third-largest country in Africa , yet it is one of the least densely populated . The vast majority of its territory is covered by the Sahara Desert , with fertile regions confined to the southern part of the country . The Niger River , which flows through the southern regions , is a vital lifeline for agriculture and transportation . and social well-being . Roads are often in poor condition , hindering trade and access to essential services . This is especially true in rural areas , where many communities are isolated and experience additional challenges like access to clean water and sanitation facilities , which in turn contribute to public health issues and poverty . Electricity access is also limited , particularly outside of urban centres . This hampers economic activity and basic services like education and the already stretched healthcare provision .
The country is characterised by an arid climate , with high temperatures and minimal rainfall . This harsh environment has significantly impacted the development of agriculture and infrastructure , contributing to Niger ' s status as one of the world ' s poorest countries .
Niger has a history of political instability , with frequent coups and military interventions . The country has struggled to establish a stable democratic system , and power has often been concentrated in the hands of a few elites . The threat of terrorism and the ongoing conflict in neighbouring Mali remain current challenges . The country ' s political landscape is also influenced by ethnic and regional tensions , which can sometimes lead to violence .
Infrastructure and economy Niger ' s infrastructure remains underdeveloped , particularly in rural areas . This poses significant challenges to economic development
