INNOVATIVE VENTILATION SYSTEMS FOR UNDERGROUND MINES UNVEILED
By Eamonn Ryan , editor RACA Journal | Cold Link Africa
At the 2024 Electra Mining Africa Expo in September , Terry Perce , managing director of ventilation manufacturing specialist firm ABC Ventilation Systems showcased its advanced ventilation and technology solutions designed specifically for underground mining operations globally . The ventilation distribution system includes ventilation ducting and primary and auxiliary fan supply , which are critical for maintaining a healthy and safe mine working environment in challenging underground conditions .
A feature of ABC ' s offerings is the newly launched MiVentTM monitoring product , which garnered two prestigious awards at Electra Mining for its innovative ability to monitor ventilation ducting conditions in realtime . This cutting-edge technology enhances airflow management and optimises ventilation systems , making it a crucial tool for modern mining operations and enhancing the control environment , ensuring healthy , safe and productive daily working environments for miners .
At the expo , ABC Ventilation Systems also introduced its HardLineTM ducting , which is not only easier to install and transport , but also offers significant energy savings . The company ' s local manufacturing capability ensures cost-effectiveness , and a dedication to environmental and social responsibilities is reflected in its recycling initiatives and community engagement efforts .
Technical director , Marthinus van der Bank emphasised the importance of advanced friction factors in their ventilation columns , which further improve airflow and reduce operational costs for mining companies . While ABC Ventilation Systems primarily focuses on ventilation distribution rather than direct cooling solutions , its expertise extends to various industrial applications , including refineries and metallurgical plants smelting operations .
The company is actively investing in research and development to stay ahead in this rapidly evolving field of mining ventilation . Subsequently , the company is embracing automation and integration of new technologies to enhance its products and services . The recent launch of MiVentTM is characteristic of this , allowing for closer monitoring of auxiliary ventilation systems . This groundbreaking system allows for real-time observation of conditions within ventilation ducting , enabling miners to anticipate environmental challenges before they arise and assist in predictive enhancements to mitigate the risk of fan failures before they occur .
The MiVent TM product is equipped to monitor a range of critical factors , including duct velocities , airborne pollutants , gas concentrations and temperature fluctuations . At the expo , ABC Ventilation Systems displayed a simplified version of MiVentTM to accommodate the high volume of attendees while emphasising its essential features . The device measures pressure differences between the various ducting products , configurations and ambient air – providing valuable data that can help optimise work environment management .
ABC Ventilation Systems collaborates closely with mining companies and clients to understand their specific needs and challenges , ensuring that their products are tailored to the industry ' s evolving requirements . The company is also exploring advancements in artificial intelligence and smart technology , integrating Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities into their systems for enhanced monitoring and control . This integration will allow for faster data feedback , enabling mines to make informed decisions regarding ventilation management .
In addition to monitoring capabilities , ABC Ventilation Systems ’ products include advanced noise reduction features in its fans . Given the stringent regulations surrounding noise levels in mining operations , the company has developed effective attenuators to minimise sound level output . This commitment to compliance extends to their HardLineTM ducting , which offers significant energy savings compared to traditional PVC ventilation ducting . The use of engineered polymers for duct construction enhances safety through anti-static and fire retardant properties , crucial for underground environments .
One of the standout benefits of the HardLineTM ducting is its ease of installation . Unlike traditional galvanised steel ducting that requires bolts and spanners , ABC ' s ducting is designed for quick assembly , making it user-friendly for mine workers . The lightweight material is also recyclable . At end of lifecycle , the ducting can be repurposed into various products , for example furniture and school containers which can then be donated . This initiative aligns with corporate social investment plans that many mining houses are adopting to give back to the communities affected by their operations . ABC Ventilation Systems ’ ability to recycle approximately 10-15 % of its materials back into production not only minimises waste but also supports local economies .
While the initial implementation costs may be higher than traditional galvanised steel ducting options , the company emphasises the long-term benefits associated with operational savings and energy efficiency . “ Central to these savings is the advanced friction factor of ABC Ventilation Systems ' HardLineTM ducting materials . Unlike conventional ducting , which can have significant friction losses , our engineered polymer ducts provide a smoother airflow , allowing for more efficient air transport . This design enhances laminar flow , reducing turbulence and enabling the air to travel further , up to 60-70 % more distance , compared to traditional options . This efficiency translates into lower energy costs over time , making the investment in the product economically advantageous in the long run ,” said Van der Bank .
Pearce added that , “ To support local economies and mitigate supply chain issues , ABC Ventilation Systems has committed to sourcing raw materials locally and establishing domestic manufacturing processes . This strategy not only reduces reliance on fluctuating international shipping but also supports job creation and economic development within South Africa . Our vertically integrated structure ensures greater control over production , leading to improved product quality and consistency .”
He noted that by maintaining dedicated on-site teams at major mining operations , the company ensures that clients receive immediate technical support and training . “ This hands-on approach facilitates skills transfer and helps clients maximise the benefits of ABC Ventilation Systems ’ products . The company ’ s commitment to local operations extends beyond client support . We have established a comprehensive network across Africa , with trade distributors in numerous southern African countries , and are part of a global joint venture that includes operations in South America , Canada and Australia . This extensive reach allows us to provide consistent service and training , ensuring that the quality of support remains high across different regions ,” concluded Pearce . •
