Introduction
cross Africa, sport hunting is often carried out in
conjunction with other non-consumptive forms of
tourism, such as photographic, birding and fishing
safaris. It is beyond question that sport hunting, with its
low throughput, high value clients and minimal impact on the
environment, is by far the most effective means of sustainable
utilisation of Flora and Fauna in the long term.
Simply put, in order for non-consumptive tourists to generate the
equivalent income of say one buffalo/plains game hunt (12 days),
typically using one vehicle, a professional hunter, tracker and
skinner, something like seven birding or photographic enthusiasts
would have to be entertained for the same 12 day period. The
chances are that they would need more than one vehicle, a whole lot
more infrastructure and certainly have more of an impact on the
environment as they wander (even if carefully) tramping through the
