Just as matriarchs act as a repository of social knowledge in the female social group, older bulls play an important role in influencing the cohesion of male social groups (Chiyo et al., 2011). Chiyo et al. have shown that in an all male social group, all males prefer to have older bulls as their closest neighbor. Adolescent males associate most frequently with older bulls to learn from the experienced elephants. It is clear that the older bulls are central to all male social networks, and many studies have suggested that the bulls might provide source of ecological as well as social knowledge for young males (Chiyo et al., 2011).
