Fission Fusion Society :

African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are the largest land animals on earth. They are incredibly social organisms that live in a “fission-fusion” society, where the members of the group are relatively stable, but the composition of the group changes over time. Fission-fusion societies are able to adapt to changes in their physical and social environment and behave accordingly. This characteristic in the African elephant population makes them a very good model to study social structure as well as group dynamics.
