The more formal structure allows the eye to travel further past the boundary wall to the view of the mountain , taking in various focal points , while a looser planting style with softer textures closer to the house adds further interest and gives the living areas a more casual feel . The long pathway with its contemporary pavers was inter-planted periodically to break the single visual line of pavers , as well as give focus to the middle ground .”
Implementation consisted of grading , levelling , earthworks and hard landscaping , with the laying of large pavers , steel lawnedging and steel cable trellising to accommodate climbing plants , thereby softening the fairly extensive , high perimeter wall . Planting comprised a combination of formal clipped hedges as screening and to frame the focal bench , and softer planting to add colour and textural interest . Other landscaping details included custommade pavers ( 1 500mm x 500mm ); double-cross tree staking ; tensile cable trellising ; eradication of previous Kikuyu lawn and replacement with Berea lawn ... which is also known as LM grass .
With little available planting space in the back garden , a small fish pond was converted into a planter . The back wall was planted with , what could also be considered an old-fashioned climber , the Virginia Creeper ( Parthenocissus sp ), while the large urn which can be lit up at night changes what was a somewhat unsightly area from the lounge windows into an aesthetically pleasing focal point .
