The art of African architecture
I recently came across the Community Planning & Design Initiative
Africa (CPDI Africa), which is a culture-inspired, research-based,
design-build competition, created to inspire the development of
successful neighbourhoods and communities on the continent,
with modern African architecture that is both culturally and
environmentally sustainable.
The challenge for CPDI Africa is to design residential prototypes
of contemporary African architecture which reflects the culture,
aesthetics and sustainability for community design and development
in today’s Africa, yet we would argue that this is the challenge for
all architects currently working on our continent. Believing that the
redevelopment of Africa’s built environment should be as it has always
been, built as a collaborative effort between the community members
and designated master builders, CPDI Africa engages participation from the design community
in Africa and the Diaspora at large, for the accomplishment of its vision.

The great thing is that the CPDI Africa competition is open to all practitioners and students
of architecture and all related professions of the built environment, including arts & design,
engineering and urban planning. Competition is integral to the architecture industry and has
been for years; it forces individuals to push the boundaries of their creativity and has resulted
in some incredibly significant projects being created. Bee Breeders, architecture competition
organisers, have put together an interesting article on why you should enter architecture
competitions – read it HERE. To find out more about CPDI Africa, click HERE. We trust that you
will enjoy reading and sharing the latest issue of African Design Magazine! #AfricanDesign.
