Acknowledgement prize: Chicoco Radio, Port Harcourt, Nigeria Chicoco Radio is a floating media platform for waterfront slum communities, connecting land and water. The design is part of the “African Water Cities” project, which investigates the challenges and opportunities of rapid urbanization and climate change in African coastal cities. This participatory venture using locally produced materials will be the community’s voice and include recording studios, a computer center, meeting rooms, cinema, and an amphitheatre. Acknowledgement prize: Co-op Capacity Building, Kigali, Rwanda The master plan focuses on rapid urban growth and responds to the needs of the predominantly young population, establishing participatory processes with local cooperatives and stakeholders. Working with the topography, the scheme includes a collective hill-farming program, community buildings, and a market. The plan respects the Rwandan tradition, improved by a contemporary sense of public space aesthetics. Acknowledgement prize: Weaving Publicness, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia The Chamber of Commerce headquarters aims to contribute to the spatial improvement of the urban environment, and to create an architectural dialogue engaged in a global context with a strong local identity. Public spaces at ground level are integrated into the building. The façade made of “woven” locallyquarried trachyte stone reminiscent of Ethiopian stone architecture regulates ventilation and ancient textile techniques as well as sunlight. 14 africandesignmagazine.com
