Austen Bouldering Project
usten Bouldering Project is currently the largest bouldering gym in the world
and offers 2 200m² of climbing surface, 465m² of fitness area with weights and
equipment, 112m² of yoga studio space with classes held every day, an 84m²
studio for classes and private training as well as a 530m² upstairs lounge and
flex work space. Part of which, ‘the parent balcony’, overlooks the kids climbing
area. The other part, called the member lounge, overlooks the main climbing
area. The upstairs provides flex space for lounging, working and group meetings
with large work tables, bar counters, built-in bench seating and a stadium
seating corner. The staff has private offices and lounge areas upstairs.
The colourful volumes and holds in the climbing areas are splashed with natural light
during the day and are constantly adorned with climbers of all ages and experience from open
to close. Bright splashes of teal and yellow weave throughout each area: yellow tiles weave up to
meet white in the shower stalls; yellow-legged oak and steel benches line the locker rooms and
reception area; a colourful custom mural by local artist, Sophie Roach, frames the welcome area
behind a long 5m reception desk. Red oak clads the walls throughout the facility with steel corner
and base accents. Custom designed (by LSID) furniture and cushions/pillows with contrasting
patterns fill the lounge areas, most locally made.
The project was conceived in January 2013 and construction started in May of 2014. It
