streaming were also a requirement. The
design had to be optimal for taking photos
and video footage.
What was the full scope of work?
Redesigning of the studio structure,
redesigning the studio fronting, air-con
planning, cooling of in-studio equipment,
acoustic ceiling redesign for a higher volume,
a redesign of the studio acoustics for optimal
glazing, new studio furniture design and the
demolition of the existing studios.
What was the space formerly?
Radio studio construction is always a
challenge within an existing building. Usually
ceiling height becomes a problem as there
needs to be space for HVAC reticulation
and the extensive ceiling build-up for
soundproofing purposes. That turned out
to be the major issue. Because there was
live broadcasting within the building during
construction, work that caused structural
noise (such as drilling) had to be coordinated
very carefully. HVAC inlets and outlets had to
be dampened by specialized fitting to prevent
noise leakage through ducting.
What is the total size of the project?
Both studios measure 165m2 with a total size
of 330m2.

What would you say is the most
noticeable feature of the new studios?
Visibility was pushed to its limits for studio
design. Usually in radio studio design, glazing
is kept to a minimum to reduce sound
reflection. The layout of the new studios,
however, was done in such a way to allow for
large glazed surfaces.
What sustainable initiatives were
implemented in the design?
Due to the highly technical nature of the
project, it was difficult to implement
major sustainable initiatives. The new
equipment of the studios has lower power
consumption than before and all the
lighting is LED lighting. All the walls are
also highly insulated (primarily for sound
insulation), which also eliminated any
external heat gain.
Looking back at the completed
projects, what are your thoughts?
Looking back at the project it is rewarding to
see that the studios turned out better than
envisioned, as many times the architectural
vision of a project turns out to be greater
than the actualized project. Since completion
the studios have been used extensively for
radio broadcast and interviewing many local
and international celebrities. AD
