green walls
Two different green walls
at ‘Concrete House’,
Bedfordview
The team at Hortcouture
Landscape Architecture &
Planning were given a fairly open
brief for House Erasmus, also
known as the Concrete House,
where they were required to
take cues from the architecture,
replicate material used in the
structure and create enough open
space that could be utilised on
a challenging steep rocky slope,
along the Bedfordview ridge.
Warren Lange of Hortcouture said
that concrete was the central
theme of the project and this
material was used as extensively
as possible in the architecture,
while it was also a requirement
for the landscaping to create a
link between the building and the
landscape. Craig Hunter of Dig
was the landscape contractor for
the site which displays two green
walls: a sculptural vertical garden
above the shallow water feature in
the entrance atrium and a gunited
area of rock face clad in geotextile
and planted to cover the unsightly
geotechnical services, implemented
as precautionary measures.
