Q & a with SACAP president , Yashaen Luckan

Yashaen Luckan ( pictured below ) – the president of the South African Council for the Architectural Profession ( SACAP ) – unpacks what it means for architectural professionals to collaborate .

ACAP ’ s vision is around people-centred architecture for South Africa and what trickles down from this is the practice of architecture that is collaborative and also connects people and place . SACAP ’ s mission is to transform , promote and regulate the architectural profession through collaborative engagement in the pursuit of excellence . We ask Yashaen about his views on these values .
How would you define SACAP ’ s mission to transform , promote and regulate the architectural profession through
collaborative engagement in the pursuit of excellence ? Collaborative engagement is about architecture that emerges from connecting with people and place ( context ); with other disciplines such as the allied built environment professions as well as other key disciplines which relate to society , environment and economics .
What is the value of architects working together to create new ideas and solutions ? The value of collaboration is greater than architects and allied professionals working together to “ create ” the new … Collaboration across a broader community is necessary in order to respond to the realities facing society . This requires humility – giving up our expert cultures – and starting to engage with people in place . This inclusive process is inconvenient but absolutely vital to developing sustainable , humanistic architecture . The value of such collaborative practise will be architecture of greater significance to people in place , and adaptable to change ( time ).
Why is this a growing trend at the moment ? I am not certain that this is a trend . What is apparent is that architectural professionals are starting to share resources for various reasons which include , among others : technical
