African project Aurecon West – South Africa
by computer-cut , powder-coated aluminium sunscreens designed by MaC , which have leaf patterns that throw dappled light as if from a forest .
What was the inspiration behind the concept ? Due to the triangular nature of the site , a ‘ T-shape on side ’ was developed to provide flexible and subdivisable office components , with the ‘ core ’ ( lobbies , main stair , lifts and toilets ) being located in junction of the ‘ T ’. It was important that the building related somewhat in style to Aurecon East , while being able to stand alone if required , as a separate entity within the complex .
What challenges were encountered during the project ? The land was made up of several small parcels which had to be consolidated ( which was expertly handled by Planning Partners ). Another challenge was creating extra parking decks that can be converted later to office space with minimum disruption , and consideration being given to what to do with a potentially redundant ramp in future . A link bridge connecting the first floor of east to the third floor of west was also required , and this entailed detailed design coordination between the architects and structural engineers , resulting in a slightly ramped prefabricated structure which was hoisted into position one weekend and bolted to the two buildings . It received a glass roof and one side to form weather protection . The epoxy floor has embedded sand / grit to be non-slip , and it is lit by LED strip-lighting .
