TRADITIONAL STRATEGIES House De Wet by Environment Response Architects (ERA) is located in the flat valley of the Sundays River in Graaf Reniet, South Africa. The house is conceived as a typical Karroo house that is dramatically evolved; The concept begins with a large excavation, producing the soil to manufacture Hydraform blocks, to create a large basement void and soil for shaping earth berms to protect the house from flood debris. The berms will also protect the house from south west winds by diverting these winds around and over the building. Some of the wind will be channelled through a gap in two gable walls where a wind turbine will generate power for the house. Geothermal loops are buried and the house is then lifted above the flood level.
