Editor’s view
Uganda in the spotlight
Uganda, the landlocked East African country with a population of
close to 38 million, features prominently in this issue of African Design
Magazine. Firstly, we interview Ugandan architect, Doreen Adengo
from Adengo Architects about her work abroad and in Africa and chat
to her about her upcoming projects in Kampala.

We also take a look at a new development in Kampala; The Edge,
designed by Messaris Wapenaar Cole Architects, is a 160-unit complex
in Naayla, Kampala. We then feature an article on urbanisation in
Kampala – currently one of the biggest migrant destinations in Eastern
Africa.

Finally we look at an international competition aimed at creating designs for a youth asylum
in Uganda. The LGBT Youth Asylum architecture competition was looking for concepts that
offered potential for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community to grow and
further integrate with society, as opposed to isolating an already vulnerable community.
