Making a difference in Africa
When the lights went out at home because her mother wasn’t able to
pay the bill, Judy would move to the pavement to finish her homework
under a streetlight. Today Judy is a graduate of Columbia University, and
a Mandela Rhodes scholar. She recently bought her mother a new home.
But it all started under that streetlight.
At Streetlight Schools, an innovative low-cost primary school model
that focuses on enquiry, collaboration, exploration, relevance and the
use of technology to teach and learn, they aim to be the point of light
for learners in South Africa, and make the right to education directly
accessible. Read the article in this issue on PAGE 42 and see how this
could be a game-changer in education, not just in South Africa, but in
Africa too.

On a related note, for the first time since our launch in 2014, this issue of African Design
Magazine showcases projects exclusively from the African continent – ten in all – including
the latest buildings from South Africa, Namibia and Uganda, many of which have a simple
use: improving the educational facilities in the area.
