SABLE PARK Sable Park in Century City, Cape Town, comprises twin buildings that actively engage with each other as well as with both Sable Road and Bridgeways. Situated on a slight elevation, the development is visible from almost one kilometre away. Characterised by its dynamic twisting form, the development enjoys panoramic views of Table Mountain and Table Bay. H enry Abosi, associate director at dhk, says that the company was requested to provide a set of twin buildings not dissimilar to the Absa project it was involved in a few years ago. The design-focused company has established a substantial footprint in the Mother City with recent developments including the Norval Foundation museum in Steenberg, the Waterway House at the V&A Waterfront, and the redevelopment of the old Christiaan Barnard Hospital. Design brief Abosi says that the design was inspired by the world of cinematography, with the framing and capturing of spaces clearly evident in the end product. “The composition is designed as a series of complex ‘moments’ which together create a simple arrangement. There is an unmistakable animation of form. Transparency was deemed very important because of the fact that the back of each building faces towards Table Mountain. The impression it creates when one approaches the precinct is that there could be one, two or four buildings and there is no apparent front or back.” The twin development comprises one building of 8 000m 2 and one of 8500m 2 , each with two AFRICAN DESIGN MAGAZINE © | JULY 2018 21
