SABLE PARK
Sable Park in Century City, Cape Town, comprises twin
buildings that actively engage with each other as well
as with both Sable Road and Bridgeways. Situated on a
slight elevation, the development is visible from almost
one kilometre away. Characterised by its dynamic twisting
form, the development enjoys panoramic views of Table
Mountain and Table Bay.
H
enry Abosi, associate director
at dhk, says that the company
was requested to provide a
set of twin buildings not dissimilar to
the Absa project it was involved in a
few years ago. The design-focused
company has established a substantial
footprint in the Mother City with recent
developments including the Norval
Foundation museum in Steenberg,
the Waterway House at the V&A
Waterfront, and the redevelopment of
the old Christiaan Barnard Hospital.
Design brief
Abosi says that the design was inspired
by the world of cinematography, with
the framing and capturing of spaces
clearly evident in the end product. “The
composition is designed as a series of
complex ‘moments’ which together
create a simple arrangement.
There is an unmistakable
animation of form. Transparency was
deemed very important because of
the fact that the back of each building
faces towards Table Mountain. The
impression it creates when one
approaches the precinct is that there
could be one, two or four buildings
and there is no apparent front or
back.”

development
