The balancing act
Architects daily walk a fine line between aesthetics and
functionality, while the adage ‘beauty is in the eye of
the beholder’ is agelessly true, buildings should have
optimised general appeal.
Together with operational functionality, today’s
building designs need to address looming sustainability
issues. From harvesting rainwater, to energy efficient
lighting systems and the increased use of natural light
to mitigate the depletion of non-renewable resources,
the drive to promote environmental stewardship is a
focal point of building design.
Apart from our local focus, in this issue we visit
Mozambique, China and Amsterdam in search of
international design trends.
