Namibia
Emcon Consulting Group occupies a small consulting office building in the heart of
Klein Windhoek, Namibia. Prior to its renovations, the building was a private residence,
until its extension and re-occupation in 2008.
Designed with large glazed areas that are aimed to provide plenty of daylight into the
building as well as expansive external views. The overhanging extended roof is
complimented with internal blinds that offer shade and glare control.
The hot and dry Windhoek air is accounted for by an
energy efficient evaporative cooling system that
provides 100% fresh air and cools and humidifies
the air.
Sustainable building features include:
Ÿ Solar power plant;
Ÿ an intelligent building monitoring
system;
Ÿ live on-screen energy and water
usage display and
Ÿ lndoor environment quality testing
of CO2, temperature and
natural/artificial light.
Omake House in Namibia was developed by F.A.H. Properties with Stauch and Partners
Architects and SCE itself serving as Engineers in all disciplines. The building
construction commenced in January 2006 and was completed and occupied by December
2006.
The building was designed and built with sustainable designs and energy efficient
principals that have qualified it for a Green Star rating. With the proper implementation
of sustainable and efficient principals, the building uses less energy and has a higher
occupant satisfaction.
From the sustainability and efficiency principals applied, the building orientation has
played a vital role in reducing the amount of heat load and heat gain through solar
radiation, while allowing all workstations within the offices to have external views.
The integrated solar
power plant (50 kWp),
LED downlights, and
efficient HVAC system,
have all contributed to
the energy efficiency of
the building.
